In an era where social interactions shifted almost entirely online, we found ourselves more connected than ever—yet oddly disconnected. Endless scrolling, passive interactions, and fleeting likes had replaced genuine engagement. As an enthusiast of online social interaction and a student in UC San Diego’s COGS 123 Social Computing course, I teamed up with four fellow researchers and designers to explore a better way to connect—one that was interactive, creative, and truly social.

Guided by UX principles, a heap of surveys, iterations, and prototypes, we brought ‘DaVinki’ to life—a social app inspired by a certain legendary artist (and maybe a viral meme featuring a confused duo of twins). Our goal? To create a playful digital space where users could capture, share, and co-create, proving that even in isolation, connection (and a little fun) was just a tap away.

The Challenge

The Challenge

In an age where social media thrives on quick consumption, traditional platforms leave users with a fleeting experience—snap, post, and scroll. While photos capture memories, they often end up forgotten in digital archives, losing their emotional impact.

In an age where social media thrives on quick consumption, traditional platforms leave users with a fleeting experience—snap, post, and scroll. While photos capture memories, they often end up forgotten in digital archives, losing their emotional impact.

How can we create a social space that encourages users to not just share, but actively engage and collaborate around their captured moments, turning them into something meaningful and memorable?

BeReal

BeReal was conceived as an anti-Instagram platform in response to the declining interest among younger audiences in the concept of "authenticity."

Insights:

  • Incentive was that users must post in order to view others' posts.

  • However, this requirement can often feel like a hindrance rather than a meaningful form of self-expression.

User Flow

In DaVinki, all users share a common experience. Each group consists of three individuals: Person A takes the photo, while Person B and Person C contribute to drawing on it. Throughout this collaborative process, all users actively engage in both creating and drawing on the photo. Additionally, they can interact with each other's posts through likes and comments upon completion.

Graphics, Logos, & Style Guide

I had a lot of fun creating the overall aesthetic and designing the graphics, which included logos and a style guide. These elements were crucial for defining the theme of our app and ensuring design consistency during the prototyping process. The graphics were specifically crafted to promote doodling, utilizing cartoonish characters and primary colors to illustrate the basics of drawing.

Prototyping

First Iteration

In our first iteration of prototyping, we aimed to simulate how users would engage with our DaVinki app. Our team conducted a user testing session with approximately 24-30 participants.

We utilized Discord to facilitate the prototyping experience. Participants were divided into six teams and further grouped into two sets, with three teams in each. This division was implemented to replicate the complete cycle of user flow interaction. Each participant joined the designated channel on the Discord server based on their group number. We asked each team to nominate one person as the team representative to send in the photos in the Discord.

Participants were then prompted with a notification indicating it was time to take a photo to commence their creative journey! We sent the photo prompt to each channel on our Discord server: 'Strike a pose with your group as if you were Greek statues'. Once each team had taken their photos, the team representative submitted them to their respective team channel.

The drawn photos were then passed on to the next team to add another doodle and complete the masterpiece. This time, participants could choose from two prompts: 'Draw people as villains' or 'Draw people as sidekicks'. Finally, users could view their collaborative photos and drawings in the explore channel, where they could like and react to the images.

Common Behaviors

Users kept re-submitting the remix photo on the Discord channel because they thought it did not send through, which caused multiple of the same text to be sent (Discord glitch)

Users were spending a little too long than the given time we provided to do each task due to the lack of a visible timer

Main takeaways to consider for the next prototype

  • How can we further incentivize users to continue using the app?

  • How can we make drawings look less messy when collaborating?

  • How can we divert from pre-existing drawing platforms?

  • How can we make the prompts more broad to allow users to expand on their creativity but still guide their drawings.

We conducted another prototyping session after two weeks to address the feedback received from the first prototype and enhance the overall experience.

Similar to our initial iteration, users were prompted to submit a photo, draw on it, and contribute to an ongoing drawing. However, in this session, we restricted users to a single color palette to symbolize the standardized starting point for all users. Additionally, timers were integrated into the interface to clearly indicate the allocated time for each step. Implementing time constraints aimed to prevent drawings from becoming overly messy.

After each drawing round, users receive a certain amount of coins as a reward for completing the activity. We've integrated a store into the prototype, allowing users to purchase customizations for their inklet (character avatar) and unlock additional color palettes using the earned coins. This incentivizes users to return to the app regularly.

We have also introduced a feature where the collaborative drawings receiving the highest number of votes on the community forum each month will be eligible for reimagination by a professional artist. To illustrate this concept, we selected the most popular collaborative photo-drawing from our initial prototyping session and recreated it.

Based on the feedback we received throughout the two rounds of prototyping, we diligently addressed the app's shortcomings while also enhancing various aspects of DaVinki.

Our aim was to strike a delicate balance between providing users with creative freedom and preventing their drawings from becoming cluttered. In order to achieve this, we proposed implementing limitations that restrict the user's canvas. As guided by the drawing prompts, the photos are cropped or zoomed to better guide the user's drawing process and presents an additional layer of challenge to push their creative thinking.

In addition to this, we delved deeper into the details regarding collaborations with professional artists and expanded on what this entails. We have outlined a user flow that illustrates the process of becoming an verified artist affiliated with the DaVinki platform. As shown below, artists are allocated a designated community page in which users can engage with artists and their work. To further support the artistic community on DaVinki, the platform provides an incentives such as a commission for their work, striving to promote and reward the creativity of our artists

Prototyping limitations

Prototyping limitations

Our prototyping sessions, conducted through Discord and its community server setting, along with the remix feature, closely resembled the app's intended features. However, slight discrepancies may have hindered the user interaction we aimed for. Exploring alternative prototyping methods, including a comprehensive lo-fi model, could enhance the overall testing experience for our users.

Importance of clear instructions

Importance of clear instructions

Clear instructions are crucial, especially when navigating experimental features like Discord remix. Providing participants with concise and unambiguous instructions ensures a smoother prototyping experience, allowing users to focus solely on app exploration rather than technical hurdles or confusion. We plan to refine our instruction delivery and evaluate user comprehension during future evaluation sessions.

Challenges of collaborative drawing

Challenges of collaborative drawing

Collaborative drawing proved to be challenging. Iterating through various user flow charts to facilitate multiple users' contributions without overwhelming the process was daunting. While we eventually found a viable solution, mitigating messy drawings while maintaining engaging prompts remains unresolved. Additionally, optimizing drawing functionality for mobile devices poses an additional challenge. Despite these hurdles, we remain committed to our vision for DaVinki and its potential to foster interactive growth within our audience.

Next steps

Our next phase with DaVinki focuses on refining ideas from our prototyping session and designing UI screens for the verified artist feature. This addition enriches the app, fostering connections among passionate artists while compensating them for their contributions.
